I’ve done my fair share of yo-yo dieting in the past. I’d do really well for a while, then fall off the wagon for a few weeks… months, and then finally get my act together again. The constant back-and-forth was draining and always produced inconsistent results. Maybe you can relate.
All of you have health, fitness and/or physique goals you’d like to achieve.
Lose 20lbs, get stronger, look good in a swimsuit, etc.
Those are all wonderful, attainable goals. And, guess what...
You don’t need another diet to get there.
That’s right. You don’t need Keto, Paleo, or Whole30 to get the results you’re after. The moment I realized this I felt as if a veil had been removed from my eyes. I could finally see clearly!
There’s nothing inherently wrong with any of these diets, in fact, all of them have basic principles that I practice daily. The issue with most diets are the rigidity and obsession that often accompany them. There’s only so much you can take before things start breaking down.
Can you really see yourself following a strict diet plan 5, 10, 15 years down the road?
The answer is “NO".
You only have so much will power and can only endure so much stress before you crack. Many diets produce temporary results because the methods are unsustainable. At SST we’re in the business of lasting results. If you’re going to put in the work you want to see some long lasting benefits… right?
The best way to achieve those goals, with long lasting results, is through positive lifestyle changes. I say “positive” because there are plenty of lifestyle changes you could make that will have a negative effect on your health—you may already be practicing some of them. There’s nothing ground breaking about lifestyle changes, but they work and they can work for you too.
Positive lifestyle changes could be any of the following: drinking more water, increasing activity, eating more fresh produce, smaller portions, cutting out excessive snacking, not keeping sweets in the house… the list goes on and on.
The most effective lifestyle changes meet three very important criteria:
1. Does it make sense for YOU?
If you work Monday-Friday, never cook, and decide you’re going to start meal prepping breakfast, lunch and dinner from now on that’s probably biting off more than you can chew. Don’t waste your time making changes you can’t follow through with. If it doesn’t make sense you won’t do it.
Choose something that you can definitely commit to. Something you know you'll follow through with. Once you follow through on the first lifestyle change, the next one will be easier. Over time these modest changes lead to a massive transformation.
2. Can you start today?
These changes don’t have to be big things. It can be as small as drinking a bottle of water a day. Start small and build from there. Make sure you have everything you need in front of you to get started now. Don’t put it off until tomorrow. Start today!
At SST we've noticed the people who start TODAY are almost always successful. On the other hand, those who "wait til tomorrow" almost never get started. You don't want that to be you, do you?
3. Can you do it for the next 15 years?
Lasting changes produce lasting results. Consistency is key.
I like this saying from Dan John:
“Changing your health is like making a U-turn with the Titanic… it takes a while”
It won’t happen overnight. It WILL take time, but be consistent and the results will come with time.
Forget the diet.
Start with small, sustainable changes. Those small changes will turn into better habits. And before you know it, those better habits will turn into a better lifestyle.
Do you need accountability during your lifestyle change? Are you ready to take that next step?
